Nabeela is a grassroots volunteer and youth activist with volunteering experience in peacebuilding, civic engagement and girls’ non-formal education. For three years she has been leading the revision of the senior girl guides' handbook to make it more progressive and proactive by including modules in civic engagement, reproductive health and empathetic leadership etc. She is an Advocacy Champion with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and a member of the Executive Member of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association. She founded Sisterhood Initiative after mobilizing a community of like minded young women online and now she is Head of Operations and oversees all functions. Her belief in the value of intra-faith conversations started when she was 18 years old touring with a group of diverse youth to facilitate workshops on peace and reconciliation in every province with Sri Lanka Unites, leading to her creating ‘Sisterhood Initiative’ which works towards creating platforms for Muslim women to engage in discussions, find a sense of community and raise awareness on cases of injustice that Muslim women around the island face. In the year 2020 she was recognized by Amnesty International and the UN Office of the Secretary General’s Envoy on Youth as a young human rights defender in the face of the pandemic.
